![]() ![]() While I was dismayed to learn that Citibank thought American Armenians were “bad guys” or some sort of “mafia,” I was delighted to see that the CFPB was there to protect Americans of Armenian descent. So when I read the Consent Order from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) fining Citibank $29.5 million for discriminating against Americans of Armenian descent - people like me whose names end in “ian” or “yan” - I had a mixed reaction. I had even regulated the bank when I served in the federal government and was the general counsel who authorized its acquisitions of failed S&Ls in California and Florida in the early 1980s, which by the way got my agency and several of its officials - including me - sued by disgruntled shareholders of the failed institutions. ![]() Imagine my surprise when I realized the institution where I have banked for 40 years thought I might be part of a criminal enterprise. ![]()
